white-lined Sphinx moth (Sphingidae) Hornworm on American pokeweed (Phytolacca americanaNightshade 510
Add to LightboxA Hornworm feeds on Nightshade or Pokeweed. It will evolve into a beautiful, white-lined Sphinx moth (Sphingidae). This moth hovers like a hummingbird to drink nectar from flowers. It was on the pokeweed, but I can't find reference that pokeweed is a food source for it. American pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) has beautiful ink-colored berries which are poisonous to humans. Pokeweed is a food source of the larvae of some Lepidoptera species, including the giant leopard moth (Hypercompe scribonia). Other hornworms feed on tomato plants which are in the nightshade family.
