Add to LightboxThis is a really big lobster; a breeder best left to propagate the species. The crusher claw is about 10" long. The most obvious marine animal surrounding this Lobster Den in Eastport, Maine, is the orange colored Stalked Sea Squirt, or Tunicate (Boltenia ovifera), on the viewer's right. Above this Arthropod is an encrusting sponge or tunicate and some tiny 1 1/4" Northern Lamp Shells (Terebratulina septentrionalis) beneath it. Counter-clockwise on the left are some finger sized Cup or Chalice Sponges, probably (Phakellia ventilabrum). Below is a red Anemone and next to that, near the lobster's elbow, is a group of delicate Slime Worms (Myxicola infundibulum). Right in front of the lobster is a pale, translucent white Sea Vase (Ciona intestinalis). Much more can be picked out. This is a great photograph of the diversity of life found in the North Atlantic Ocean.
