A pleasant pattern of alternating leaves is formed when photographing from above, looking down on these Red Maple (Acer) saplings in the fall. I notice some Red Maples, or Swamp Maples, go red in the fall while others are yellow.

Pointed edges on jagged leaves such as Maples (Acer) allow for more uptake of water, or sap, in the spring. The points are packed with xylem, facilitating the uptake and eventual evaporation of water. This brings nutrients up to the tree quickly in the spring. The jagged edges may also help the tree combat the cold in the fall. The red maple is not the maple of choice for maple syrup production, but still could be tapped.

Maple leaves symbolize generosity.
