Add to Lightbox DownloadA Hermit Crab covered in Hydroids called Snail Fur (Hydractinia echinata) was photographed in Salem, Massachusetts. These hydroids (Anthoathecata) are in the phylum cnidaria, along with anemones. They are very tiny, just over an eighth of an inch in height. The crab is an Acadian Hermit (Pagurus acadianus) The Crab, complete with it's recycled shell, is a bit bigger than a golf ball, though the crabs body will only reach 1 1/4" in length.
