River Herring or Alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) Swim against a strong current to reach their spawning pond. This photo is a vertical orientation. Alewives are nearly identical to but generally longer than Blueback herring. Distinction is made by dissection. They grow to 12.8”. Alewife spawns at 51F-80F degree water; Blueback spawns at 57F-80F degree water. What happens with global warming remains to be seen.
