Sunflower Star, Port Hardy UW©JMC'09_012r.
Add to LightboxIt's easy to see why this is named a Sunflower star, (Pycnopodia helianthoides) when looking at this photograph made in British Columbia, Canada. The orange radial disk, or center, glows in the deep water. These are the largest sea stars known, with many arms. It is also called the twenty-rayed sea star, though this one has 22 arms. It grows to a meter wide and can weigh well over 10 pounds.
