Male Magnificent Frigate Bird puffs up in Galapagos

Magnificent Frigate-birds (Fregata magnificens) feed mainly on fish but will eat all kinds of sea life, including baby turtles. They are adept pirates, stealing catch form other birds. They breed in colonies, with nests low to the ground. Male Frigates courtship display by inflating their red throat pouch, with upturned bill and shaking wings while calling to females. Initially both parents feed the young, but it eventually falls on the female. The nest is always guarded even from other Frigates. Although they are seabirds, their feathers are not waterproof, so they cannot land on the water. Tracking devices placed on frigate birds have shown that they often stay in the air for a month and half non-stop, riding high air currents. Fregatidae live in all tropical and subtropical oceans.
