Basket Star on Soft Coral BCUW©JMC_206
Add to LightboxI have a fascination with the white Basket Stars which unfurl their frilly arms in the dark currents to feed on tiny sea life that passes by. Here this small specimen (Gorgonocephalus eucnemis) is nestled in cold-water bright Red Soft Coral polyps (Gersemia rubiformis). The star can reach 30" fully open and the coral is about a foot tall. The image was made off Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
