Male Bittern Bites Female's Neck DSC_7388C_16x9

After much strutting before the female, the male American bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) bows his head to her. She taps it with her beak, then he rises, grabs her by the neck as seen here, and swings over to mount her. It's over quickly. He departs. She shakes herself off and skulks away, keeping a low profile.
