Lady Carb or Calico Crab, P-town UWNE©JMacCausland_
Add to LightboxThe Ocellate Lady Crab (Ovalipes ocellatus) has a 3 1/2" wide carapace. They are not large, but they are feisty. The carapace is a pretty, red-freckled pattern. It is a swimming crab, like blue crabs. The final hind leg pair are formed into flat, paddles which aid in their speedy swimming. These modified rear legs, which are shaped like flat paddles, are called swimmerets. Lady crabs are voracious predators. This one lives in the eel grass bed off P-town Harbor.
