Add to Lightbox
Horseshoe Crabs (Limulus polyphemus) are a keystone species, supporting an entire ecosystem. A blackbird is eating Horseshoe Crab Eggs as fast as it can. This lone specimen, probably a male Boat-tailed Grackle (quiscalus major) was likely nesting in the nearby marsh.
This image was accepted into the Plymouth Center for the Arts & the Southeastern Massachusetts Pine Barrens Alliance's exhibition: "Horseshoe Crab: Against All Odds", June 2024.
