Add to LightboxAtlantic Slipper Limpets (Crepidula fornicata) are hermaphrodites. The largest shell, assuming the bottom position of the stacked group of shelled limpet mollusks, is a female. When she dies, the next one in line, a male, will become a female. The remaining others in the stack are males, until they move to the first position, as needed. The Sanderlings flock to the bays where these limpets wash up in rough weather to feed on the sweet limpet meat.
