Add to LightboxThis huge Wood Bison (Athabascan, Wood Bison) targeted me from a distance, so I sought cover. Athabascan Wood Bison are an additional 500 pounds larger than the Plains Bison Bison of Yellowstone. They are the largest mammal in North America. Previously listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) the Canadian government down listed the wood bison (Bison bison athabascae) from endangered to threatened status in 1988, through conservation efforts. There are no wild Wood bison in the USA.
