Male Hood Merganser Swims Proud winter©JMC'14 394DY
Add to LightboxA Male Hooded Merganser (Lophodytes cucullatus) dives in an ice-free winter harbor. His head crest is back lit by a setting sun. The protective nictitating eye membrane, the third eyelid, can be seen crossing over the duck's eye. The nictitating membrane allows water birds to see underwater while diving for food.
